Asiatique The Riverfront: The Easy Bangkok Night Market

What It Is

Asiatique occupies the site of the old East Asiatic Company docks on Charoen Krung Road, where teak warehouses once handled cargo coming up the Chao Phraya. The warehouses were converted into an open-air market and entertainment complex, and the industrial bones are still visible in the roof trusses and brickwork.

There are around a thousand shops and dozens of restaurants across four districts, plus a waterfront promenade that runs the length of the site.

It opens from about 17:00 until midnight, and it is designed as an evening. Arriving in daylight means finding half of it shut.

The Honest Assessment

Asiatique is the easy night market. Prices are largely fixed, the walkways are wide and clean, there is air conditioning in the restaurants, and nobody is going to hassle you.

That makes it the least authentic of Bangkok's markets and the most comfortable. Both things are true at once. If you want the crush and the bargaining of a real Thai market, this is not it and Chatuchak is. If you have had a long day of temples and want a riverside dinner with some shopping attached, Asiatique is exactly right.

What Else Is Here

Two ticketed attractions share the site, which makes an evening here more than a meal and a wander.

Skyflyers Wings of Garudapterus is a vertical ride that lifts you 135 metres for a full view of the river and the skyline. Best at dusk.

Jurassic World: The Experience is a walk-through exhibition with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, open until 22:00 with last entry at 21:00. Check the peak and off-peak ticket rules before booking, because they are stricter than they look.

There is also a long-running cabaret show on site, and the riverfront restaurants along the promenade are the best places to eat here.

Getting There

The free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier, beside BTS Saphan Taksin. It runs through the evening, takes around ten minutes, and arrives at the waterfront.

That boat is a large part of the appeal. You come down the river at dusk with the city lighting up, which beats any approach by road. Our getting around Bangkok guide has the river detail.

Taking a taxi down Charoen Krung in the evening is slower and gives you none of that. Do it only if you are coming from somewhere the boat does not serve.

Eating

The riverside restaurants are the reason to stay. Tables face the water, the range runs from Thai to international, and prices sit above street food and below hotel dining.

Book ahead at weekends for a waterfront table, or arrive before 19:00. The stalls inside the warehouse districts do cheaper Thai food if you would rather graze, though our street food guide covers where the city genuinely excels at that.

ICONSIAM or Asiatique?

They are the two riverside complexes people compare, and the split is clean.

ICONSIAM is indoor and air-conditioned, opens at 10:00, and has the better food in SookSiam. It wins on a hot afternoon or in the rain.

Asiatique is open-air, evening only, and has the attractions and the market feel. It wins on a dry night.

Who It Suits

Families, couples on a first Bangkok trip, and anyone wanting a low-effort evening after a demanding day. It is one of the easiest things to organise in the city.

It suits travelers hunting for the real thing less well. The prices are not negotiable, the goods are aimed at visitors, and the whole site is engineered. That is not a criticism so much as a description.

Practical Notes

Arrive around 18:00. That gives you the ride at dusk, the market in the evening and dinner after.

Check the weather. It is largely open-air and a wet-season downpour changes the experience.

Allow three hours to do it properly, or two if you are only eating and walking the promenade.
