How Pratunam Works

Pratunam is a wholesale district that tolerates retail customers. Understanding that one fact is the difference between leaving happy and leaving confused.

Most stalls quote two prices. A single item costs roughly what you would pay anywhere. Buy three or more of the same thing and the unit price drops, sometimes sharply. The trade here is built around shop owners and small buyers stocking up, and the discount structure reflects that.

Visitors work around it by pairing up. Two people buying the same shirt in different sizes often hits the threshold. Groups do better still.

If you want a single piece of clothing at a good price and nothing else, Chatuchak serves you better.

The Zones and Their Hours

The district runs on different clocks depending on which part you are in.

The wholesale morning market runs roughly 05:00 to 09:00. This is the real trade, with buyers loading stock into vans. It is interesting to see and not designed for visitors.

Retail stalls and the buildings open around 10:00 and run to about 18:00. This is when most people should come.

Some night vendors keep going until around 21:00, though the selection thins considerably.

Turn up at 09:30 and you catch the gap between the two markets, when the wholesale trade has packed up and the retail floors are still opening.

Platinum Fashion Mall

The large air-conditioned building at the centre of the district is where most visitors spend their time, and with good reason: it is cool, it is organised over several floors, and the same wholesale pricing logic applies inside.

Womenswear dominates the lower floors, with menswear, accessories and bags higher up. There is a food court at the top that is cheap and busy with the people who work in the building.

The surrounding streets and older buildings are hotter, more chaotic and often cheaper. Do the mall when the heat wins.

What To Buy

Clothing is the main event, particularly everyday fashion, basics and accessories. Bags, belts, jewellery and phone accessories fill the rest.

Quality varies widely and you should check seams and fabric before committing to three of anything. There is no meaningful returns culture.

Counterfeit branded goods are present. Be aware of what your home country's customs regime does with them.

Haggling

Less negotiable than Chatuchak, because the pricing is already structured around volume.

Ask whether there is a better price for three, rather than trying to push the single-item price down. That is the lever the vendors have.

Cash in small notes. Card acceptance is limited outside the mall.

Getting There

BTS Chit Lom is the practical station, with an elevated walkway running much of the way to Platinum. BTS Ratchathewi also works from the other side.

The walkway matters. Pratunam sits at a busy junction with heavy traffic and crossing at street level in the heat is unpleasant. Our getting around Bangkok guide covers the Skywalk network through this part of the city.

Taxis get stuck here. The area around the Pratunam intersection is one of the more congested points in central Bangkok.

Fitting It Into a Day

Pratunam is a short walk or one stop from Siam, which makes a combined shopping afternoon easy: the malls at Siam for air conditioning and brands, Pratunam for volume and price.

Two to three hours is enough. It is repetitive after that and the heat compounds.

Who It Suits

Shoppers buying in quantity, anyone stocking up on basics cheaply, and travelers who enjoy a working commercial district rather than a polished one.

It suits browsers less well. There is little to do here except shop, no river view, no temple, no food scene worth crossing town for. Come with a list.
